North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) held its Freshers’ Day Programme on 16th August 2025 at Peace Centre under the theme “Towards Better Things,” with Shri Kevethito Rose, Extra Assistant Commissioner of Chümoukedima, as the special guest. The programme marked the beginning of a new academic journey for trainees of Master of Social Work and Bachelor of Social Work, filled with messages of encouragement, inspiration, and commitment to values.
Shri Kevethito Rose, in a powerful opening to his address, reminded the gathering that youth is the best time of life—full of energy, choices, and the ability to shape the future. He urged trainees to recognize this stage of life as a gift, and to invest it in building character and purpose. Drawing from his personal experiences, he emphasized respect for parents and teachers, and the importance of obedience and discipline. He encouraged the freshers to come as empty vessels ready to be filled by NEISSR, while acknowledging that challenges are inevitable.
Shri Rose praised the friendly atmosphere of the campus and highlighted three essential qualities for social workers: humility, submission, and obedience. Shri Rose clarified humility as not thinking less of oneself but thinking less about oneself for a greater purpose. He pointed to Jesus as the ultimate role model of humility and service to humanity, encouraging students to embrace the same spirit of selflessness in their journey as future social workers.
Principal, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, also shared a message of inspiration, highlighting the institute’s core values of service to humanity, integrity, and compassion. Stressing the importance of maintaining high standards with holiness as the keystone, he emphasized the higher purpose of the social work calling and encouraged students to address social challenges by bringing solutions through their profession. His address focused on the values shaping the NEISSR way of life: reconciliation to attain peace, compassion to understand others, love, peace, and leadership to guide the community. He further drew a metaphor relating art to life and spoke about a commitment to a better cause, referencing Mahatma Gandhi as an inspiration.
Senior trainee Mr. Ajunglo Kent shared a message on behalf of the seniors, urging freshers to view challenges and opportunities through positive perspectives. The programme also featured a duet performance of a folk song by Ms. Bilu Lohe and Ms. Vishili Sakhamo, adding cultural vibrancy to the event. Freshers Mr. Zuben T. Tsanglao (MSW) spoke about the challenges ahead as social workers and expressed heartfelt gratitude, while Ms. Neiketounuo Thapo (BSW) shared her experiences so far, reflecting on the bonding, connections, and friendships formed, motivating her fellow trainees.
Ms. Likusa was crowned Miss Fresher and Mr. Seku Hoshi as Mr. Fresher, both from BSW Semester I, adding excitement to the celebration. The event was invoked by Sr. Teresa of BSW V Semester, followed by a welcome song performed by the 3rd Semester BSW trainees. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Th. Jacob Khongsai, President of Students’ Social for Social Change (SCSC).
