North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) organized a Financial Literacy Session for the BSW First Semester students on August 18, 2025, at Peace Centre, Chümoukedima. The programme was conducted under the Centre for Financial Literacy (CFL) in collaboration with CRISIL Foundation, with resource persons Mr. Zhimoka and Mr. Akam. The session aimed at equipping students with essential financial knowledge and skills while promoting responsible financial behavior among youth.
The resource persons began with a brief introduction about their organization, explaining that it is funded by NABARD and sponsored by SBI, with the main objective of reaching out to remote and unfamiliar places to promote awareness on financial schemes. They explained that although the programme was initially focused on the general public, the outcomes were not very encouraging.Hence, the current focus is on youth and students, who are more receptive and capable of spreading financial awareness.
The session covered the concept of financial literacy, emphasizing financial knowledge, skills, and attitudes such as preparing monthly budgets, cultivating saving habits, and practicing mindful spending. Students were given detailed insights into various government schemes including Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for accidental insurance, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) for life insurance, Atal Pension Yojana (APY) for retirement and pension security, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) for girl child savings, Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan Yojana (PM-SYM) for workers in the unorganized sector, and the Chief Minister’s Micro Finance Initiative (CMFFI), meant exclusively for entrepreneurs and business purposes.
In addition, the resource persons guided the students on how to apply for these schemes, including the necessary documents and procedures, making the session both practical and highly relevant. They encouraged students to pass on this knowledge to their parents and community members so that more people can benefit.
The interactive session concluded with a Q&A segment, followed by a group photograph with the students and resource persons.
