       Welcome to  North East Institute of Social Sciences & Research


Social Work as a profession became an academic subject in the early part of the last century. The sudden spurt in the professional education scenario in India in the latter part of the century gave a boost to social work education. In northeast India, like the other professional courses, Social Work was introduced rather recently. However, there are many youth opting for the course but with the limited number of Institutes and seats, a formidable number of them go to mainland India for pursuing their course. While the courses offered by the Institutes outside the northeast are at par with national and international standards, the approaches are often based on the social situations in the particular states or region. This, more often, is not replicable in the scenario of the North-Eastern states which have a distinct identity and culture than that of the rest of India. It is in this context that the Diocese of Kohima established North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) as a Master of Social Work (MSW) Institute in the year 2014 and is affiliated to Nagaland University.The courses of MSW have been contextualized to prepare the students with the theoretical know-how and expertise of peace building. At present, NEISSR offers specializations in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies, Youth Development, Community Development, and Social Entrepreneurship in MSW. From academic session 2022, the University permitted NEISSR to start BSW course, and from 2024 BA Political Sciences. The institute aims to expand and excel as unique professional institute in the country and especially for the region. In addition to formal PG and Undergraduate degree courses, the institute offers more than 30 value added to empower the youth with different skills to address the unemployment problems.
