  • The Time to Act is Today – Dr. Fr. C. P. Anto: Youth Mobilized for HIV Prevention and Health Promotion


    International Youth Day 2025 was commemorated at North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), 7th Mile Chümoukedima on 14th August 2025 at 10:00 a.m. The event was organized by the District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS (DISHA), Dimapur, Nagaland State AIDS Control Society (NSACS) in collaboration with the United Riders Motorcycle Club and the Red Ribbon Club (RRC), NEISSR in view of 6th National Social Work Week under the theme “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs: Preventing HIV and Promoting Health.”

    Delivering the address, Dr. Susanna Kikon, Medical Officer, ART Centre, Chümoukedima, highlighted the alarming prevalence of HIV in Nagaland, noting that the State records the second-highest HIV prevalence among adults in the country. She highlighted the vulnerability of the 15-49 age group, with many remaining unaware of their HIV status, and emphasised the moral responsibility of society to address stigma and discrimination. Dr. Kikon reiterated that while there is no cure for HIV, it is manageable through Antiretroviral Therapy (ART), which is provided free of cost, and that early testing is critical. She stressed the importance of the ABC approach – Abstain before marriage, Be faithful to one’s partner, and Correct and consistent condom use and urged the public to stop stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV, highlighting the role of compassion and community support in overcoming it.

    On the occasion, the speaker, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Principal, NEISSR and Director, Peace Channel exhorted participants to recognize their collective responsibility in combating HIV and promoting public health. We face a battle that is stealing futures quietly but relentlessly. We cannot fight this epidemic by whispering about it in private. We must turn schools and colleges into hubs of awareness. We must replace stigma with solidarity, and shame with support, he asserted. He called upon churches, academic institutions, NGOs, and government agencies to collaborate in fostering awareness and preventive measures. Emphasizing the urgency of the matter, he reminded participants that the time to act is not someday, but today and urged youth to pledge their commitment to creating a sustainable and healthy society.

    Mr. Moatemsu, President of United Riders Motorcycle Club delivered a strong message and call on the youth to create awareness for a better tomorrow, reinforced through the rendition of Amazing Grace song performed by Linkhai member of the club.

    A special number was presented by Mr. Zipise Sangtam, BSW I Semester. Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing, Vice Principal and Administrator, NEISSR, delivered the welcome address, while the invocation was pronounced by Dr. Toli H. Kiba, Nodal Officer, RRC NEISSR and Assistant Professor. The proceedings were chaired by Ms. Elizabeth Pojar, Assistant Professor, NEISSR. The programme concluded with the vote of thanks by Mrs. Mecievinuo Zhotso, District Programme Officer, DISHA.

    This observance of International Youth Day 2025 at NEISSR served as a clarion call to mobilise local youth actions towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals through the prevention of HIV and the promotion of holistic health, with an emphasis on the elimination of stigma and discrimination.

  • NEISSR Youth Development Specialisation Observes International Youth Day

    The Youth Development Specialisation of North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) observed International Youth Day on the theme ‘Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond.’ The programme commenced with an invocation prayer by Sr. Pansuri, MSW 1st Semester, followed by Bible reading and meditation led by Mr. Yangten and Mr. Tingwangsuidibo, both from MSW 1st Semester.

    Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Vice-Principal, NEISSR exhorted the trainees to be resourceful for the benefit of society. He stated that the youth are “the Now of society.” They are the best resources of the nation. They must live constructively and engage with the given task, and take up responsibility to brighten the face of society. The future should not be built at the expense of the present. The “now-present” is the most important time for the youth. The various talents and potentials must be pooled towards the nation-building. He cited the students’ participation as an example of resources that are visible and encouraging. The International Youth Day 2025 emphasised the necessity of local contribution for the SDGs and beyond. The spark of this mission can be fulfilled by the youth of the now. He cited the National Youth Policy 2021 to throw light on quality education, employment and entrepreneurship, youth leadership and development, health, sports and fitness and social justice.

    The programme was moderated by Ms. Roselyn Maria Reji, MSW 3rd Semester, and featured a variety of segments including news headlines, personal sharing, special song and thought of the day. The programme concluded with renewed encouragement for students to align their personal and professional aspirations with the broader vision of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, not just locally but with a global perspective.

  • Igniting a Justice Movement: NEISSR Launches the Next Generation of Social Workers

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Chümoukedima, successfully concluded its week-long STAR (Student Training and Academic Readiness) Orientation and Induction Programme on 19th July 2025. The programme aimed to inspire, orient, and equip new Master of Social Work (MSW) trainees for their academic and professional journey in the field of social work. The highlight of the programme was the inspiring address by Rev. Fr. Kokto Kurian, Director of NCYM, Diocese of Kohima and former Vice Principal of NEISSR, who emphasized that Social Work is not just a profession, but a movement for justice and systemic change. Drawing inspiration from Jane Addams and India’s own social reformers, he urged trainees to engage deeply with field realities and strive for ethical and transformative practice.

    The orientation featured a wide range of sessions delivered by NEISSR faculty and accomplished alumni now serving across various sectors. Among the notable alumni speakers was Ms. Matsunginla, Project Coordinator at Vitamin Angels, who highlighted the importance of community involvement and equity in health-based social work. Mr. Longngan K. Phom, AFHC Counsellor at Civil Hospital Dimapur, discussed the social worker’s role as a connector within health systems. Mr. Yomakumba Ao, State Programme Coordinator at Antarang Foundation, shared experiences from working with students and educational institutions, focusing on building inclusive learning environments. Mr. Kanoho G. Jakha, District Lead of the NECTAR project, presented insights on the Lighthouse Project and the importance of policy-level social work. Ms. K.H. Katini, Program Support Officer, Antarang, Dimapur elaborated on community-based social work interventions, drawing from her field experiences.

    Ms. Manngoi S., Protection Officer (Non-Institutional Care) from DCPU Chumoukedima, led a powerful session on “Social Work with Children.” She discussed the importance of non-institutional care like foster care and sponsorship, and guided trainees on ethical standards, fieldwork documentation, and resume preparation. Mr. Sebi Chacko, Regional Coordinator of Don Bosco Job Placement Network India (AIDA), addressed the role of networking in social work. He emphasized that collaboration with NGOs, government agencies, and CSR initiatives is vital for resource mobilization, advocacy, and professional growth. Ms. Tosangla Chang, an Independent Researcher and Community Engagement Specialist, inspired the trainees to embrace social research as a method of influencing systems. She highlighted participatory methods and encouraged students to engage with ethnographic studies, documentation, and collaboration with academic and global organizations.

    Alongside alumni contributions, NEISSR faculty members provided thematic sessions to academically and professionally ground the freshers. Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing provided insights on NEISSR vision and mission. Ms. Judith Huidina elaborated on fieldwork expectations and supervision. Dr. Toli H. Kiba provided an overview of various social work settings across India. Mr. Barnic Rajianlung Gangmei explored NEISSR’s core values of empathy, justice, and humility, while Dr. Lily Sangpui reminded trainees of the profession’s ethical foundation and mission-oriented nature. Ms. Elizabeth Pojar introduced the students to NEISSR’s vibrant club and forum culture. Mr. Vizosu Kikhi gave an insightful session on goal setting and the role of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC). Ms. Bokatoli Kinimi discussed core methods of social work practice, and Dr. Abel Ariina briefed students on academic rules, evaluation, and examination systems.

    The week-long programme, organized under the guidance of the faculty and alumni, helped trainees gain clarity on their roles as future social workers and infused them with a deep sense of purpose. With sessions blending real-life experiences, academic guidance, and reflections on the values of justice, empathy, and service, the STAR Orientation 2025 successfully prepared the MSW trainees to embark on their transformative journey at NEISSR.

  • NEISSR Kicks Off STAR Induction and Orientation Programme 2025

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), 7th Mile, Chümoukedima, inaugurated its STAR (Student Training and Academic Readiness) Induction and Orientation Programme 2025 for the new Master of Social Work (MSW) batch on 16th July 2025 at the NEISSR BAM Hall.

    The event was graced by Dr. Fr. George Rino, Parish Priest of St. Joseph Church and Principal of St. Joseph Higher Secondary School, Chümoukedima, as the Special Guest. In his address, he inspired the students by emphasizing that the day marked the beginning of new opportunities—a time to reinvent oneself, ignite minds, and build destiny. He highlighted that education is about shaping souls and living what we learn, underscoring that success comes not merely through dreams, but through committed action. He urged students to become seekers of justice and agents of societal transformation, rather than passive job seekers, especially in the face of increasing youth unemployment in Nagaland.

    In the welcome address, Rev. Fr. G.L. Khing, Vice Principal and Administrator of NEISSR, warmly received the new students, inviting them to consider NEISSR as their home. He emphasized the institute’s friendly and familial atmosphere, encouraging open communication and collaboration between students, faculty, and management. “When individuals grow, society grows,” he stated.

    Mr. Jacob Khongsai, President of the Student Council of Social Change (SCSC), called on the trainees to remain rooted in justice, kindness, compassion, and understanding, and to be catalysts of change in their communities.

    Ms. Elizabeth Pojar, Assistant Professor, introduced NEISSR’s vision, mission, and academic ethos, helping the new students understand the institute’s commitment to excellence in social work education.

    The programme began with an invocation by Dr. Fr. Mathew Thuniampral, Governing Board Member of NEISSR, and was chaired by Ms. Nlumpeule, Assistant Professor. The event also featured musical performances by Ms. Vilhourienuo Sekhose (BSW 3rd Semester) and Ms. Sensile Magh (MSW 3rd Semester), which brought a rich cultural flavour to the gathering.     The STAR Induction Programme marks the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the new batch of MSW students.   • “Laudato si” in action at NEISSR

    Chümoukedima, July 8, 2025

    In a symbolic gesture of environmental responsibility, the commission for “Care for God’s Creation”, Diocese of Kohima initiated plantation of trees at NEISSR. The commission is spearheaded by Shri. Nosazol Charles and Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil. The initiative is an outcome of Pope Francis Encyclical, “Laudato si” which emphasised on the care for God’s creation. The Encyclical calls for global responds to protect the Mother Earth.

    The event highlighted the urgent need to protect and preserve the environment, encouraging the adoption of eco-friendly habits and the reduction of plastic usage. Sharing practical implementation, Shri. Nosazol Charles recalled the 5th Regional Youth Convention 2025 held at Kohima, where participants embraced a plastic-free zone using plant leaves to serve food and avoiding plastic bottles. He warned that continued irresponsible human actions are causing severe damage to the environment. He further urged everyone to take positive action to preserve and promote the love for God’s creation. Rev. Fr. Chacko Karinthayil shared the spiritual and ecological significance of the initiative.

    Earlier, the program began with an interaction session chaired by Rev. Fr. G. L. Khing, Vice Principal, NEISSR, who welcomed the gathering and introduced the purpose of the event. NEISSR students and Peace Channel members attended the program and planted trees as part of the event.

    The program concluded with a prayer led by Rev. Fr. George Rino, Parish Priest, St. Joseph Parish, Chümoukedima. The activity symbolized a collective commitment to safeguarding God’s creation and promoting sustainable living.

  • NEISSR concludes STAR Programme for BSW Students

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) successfully concluded its STAR (Students Training and Academic Readiness) programme on 29th May 2025 for the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students. The week-long training aimed to equip students with foundational knowledge, practical skills and a professional attitude required in the field of social work.
    The programme served as an academic orientation and capacity-building initiative, helping the students transition from classroom learning to real-world fieldwork. Throughout the programme, participants were introduced to the NEISSR’s mission, vision and core values, methods of social work, the importance of fieldwork practicum, leadership skills, goal setting, peer mediation, community engagementand social analysis. Each of these components was designed to help students gain a holistic understanding of their role as future social workers and community leaders.
    The final day of the programme was marked by an interactive and practical session on social analysis led by Mr. Vizosü Kikhi, Assistant Professor NEISSR. In his session, Mr. Kikhi introduced the students to Problem Tree Analysis, a participatory tool widely used in social work and development sectors to understand the root causes and consequences of social problems.
    Students were divided into groups and engaged in a Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) exercise, where they were tasked to identify a prevailing social issue within a community. Through the problem tree analysis, students learned how to differentiate between the root causes, core problems and their effectsallowing them to develop a deeper understanding and solution for complex social issues faced by communities.
    In addition to social analysis, the session emphasized personal and academic goal-setting. Students were guided to reflect on their aspirations and map out their short- and long-term goals. This exercise was designed to foster self-awareness, motivation and a sense of direction in both their academic journey and future social work practice.

  • Nagaland University Inspection Team Visits NEISSR for Permanent Affiliation

    The Nagaland University Inspection Team visited the North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), 7th Mile, Chumoukedima, Nagaland for the inspection towards granting permanent affiliation. The team was led by Prof. Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, Senior Professor, Department of Economics, as the Convenor, with Prof. Athungo Ovung, Professor, Department of Sociology, and Dr. Sandeep Gupta, Associate Professor, Department of Sociology, as members.

    The program began with an invocation by Dr. Fr. Robin Thomas, followed by a warm welcome from Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR. In his opening address, Dr. Anto highlighted NEISSR’s pioneering contributions in the field of social work, peace education, and community service. He emphasized the institute’s commitment to holistic student development and its unique position as the only institute in India offering a specialization in Peace and Conflict Transformation Studies (PCTS) under social work. He also underlined the significance of fieldwork focusing on tribal engagement, community enrichment, and addressing the diverse social problems of ethnic groups in the region.

    Dr. Fr. Mathew Thuniampral, member of the Governing Board, appreciated the vision behind NEISSR and its efforts to shape leaders with compassionate hearts and broad minds. Representing the Diocese of Kohima, he shared how the Church envisioned the need for professional courses that encourage students to dream big and make a difference. He also extended his gratitude to late Prof. A Lanunungsang Ao, whose unwavering support has been instrumental since the institute’s inception.

    Prof. Mithilesh Kumar Sinha, convenor of the inspection team, appreciated the vision and progress of the institute. He highlighted the pressing need to address growing social problems, even as India’s economy advances rapidly. He stressed the importance of real development grounded in human values and social justice, noting the visible conflicts and inequalities in society. Urging students of social work to take active responsibility, he emphasized their role in creating a just and humane society.

    In his motivational address, Prof. Athungo Ovung encouraged students and faculty to maintain a positive attitude, dream big, and act with humility. He emphasized cultivating gratitude, self-esteem, and a desire for excellence, while urging greater engagement in research and innovation. He expressed his wish to remain connected with NEISSR.

    Dr. Sandeep Gupta commended the unique concept of the Peace Lab and acknowledged NEISSR’s commitment to quality education. He lauded the institute for consistently producing UGC-NET qualified candidates and for maintaining academic standards.

    A visual presentation showcasing the journey and impact of NEISSR was delivered by Ms. Elizabeth Pojar, Assistant Professor. The program was chaired by Ms. Nlumpeule, Assistant Professor, and concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Toli H. Kiba, Assistant Professor and IQAC Coordinator.

    The visit marks a significant milestone in NEISSR’s pursuit of academic excellence and institutional growth as it moves towards securing permanent affiliation from Nagaland University.

  • Transform Nagaland in all levels by training more professional Social Workers: Dr. Y Hukheli Zhimomi

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) organized a grand farewell programme for the outgoing batches of Master of Social Work (2023–2025) and Bachelor of Social Work (2022–2025) on the 2nd of May, 2025, at the Bishop Abraham Memorial Hall, Peace Centre, NEISSR under the theme “Glitz and Glam Gala.”

    The programme was graced by Dr. Y. Hukheli Zhimomi, Assistant Headmistress, Government High School, Toluvi, as the Special Guest. In her heartfelt message, Dr. Zhimomi expressed her deep admiration for the culture of NEISSR and the strength, values, and potential of its students. She reminded the outgoing trainees that the world needs changemakers—individuals who are bold, kind, and rooted in strong values. Urging the need to train more professional social workers to transform Nagaland, she encouraged the students to be willing to serve their communities with humility, to give of themselves in service to society, and to find true fulfillment in losing oneself for the sake of others.

    In a deeply inspiring address, Dr. Fr. C.P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR, emphasized the call to holiness as a cornerstone of professional and personal life. He congratulated the students for completing not just an academic journey but for shaping and enriching the institution through their presence and contributions. He highlighted their academic excellence, commitment to fieldwork, leadership, mentorship, peer support, and spiritual involvement. As they step into new chapters, Dr. Fr. Anto urged them to carry forward not just a degree, but holiness, compassion, resilience, insight, and a strong dedication to building peace and nurturing a society filled with professionally trained social workers and peace builders.

    Messages were also shared by Dr. Toli H. Kiba and Mr. Vizosu Kikhi, Assistant Professors at NEISSR. Dr. Toli reminded the students that social work extends beyond textbooks into a life lived with compassion, justice, and humility. Mr. Vizosu encouraged the trainees to be the torchbearers of peace and social transformation and to step out not merely as job seekers but as nation builders, seeking not only success but to be significant.

  • Dream Big, Lead Boldly: Theja Meru Urges Youth to Build a Proud Nagaland and India

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Peace Centre, 7th Mile Chumoukedima, in collaboration with Clefnote Music Academy, organized a grand Cultural-cum-Literary Day on 28th April 2025 at the BAM Hall, NEISSR under the theme ‘Waving Words, Wearing Heritage’.
    The occasion was graced by Shri Theja Meru, Chairman of the Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA), Government of Nagaland, as the Special Guest, and Dr. Tolto Metha, Team Member of the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency, Government of Nagaland, as a distinguished guest.

    Special Guest Shri Theja Meru expressed profound gratitude to NEISSR for cultivating not only academic excellence but also nurturing talent, beauty with brains, and intelligence that contribute to the pride of the North East and India as a whole. Citing the visionary ideals of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Shri Meru exhorted the youth to embrace the culture of dreaming big, stating unequivocally that to dream small is a crime. He urged students to translate their dreams into reality through hard work, smart strategies, and a resilient spirit.
    Highlighting key elements of success, Shri Meru called for the emulation of the Japanese work culture, particularly the ethos of Toyota—marked by dedication, team spirit, harmony, continuous improvement, punctuality, mutual respect, and long-term vision. He exhorted the gathering to believe in their own abilities, to discard the culture of blame, and to cultivate leadership rooted in action, perseverance, and innovation. He emphasized that dreams must not be confined to the boundaries of the State or the North East but must aspire to contribute significantly to the larger national landscape. “Dream big and do big, not only for Nagaland and the North East but for the glory of India,” he remarked with fervor.

    Rev. Dr. C.P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR, delivered an exhortation speech emphasizing the need for collective responsibility in preserving, protecting, and promoting the invaluable cultural heritage of the region. He expressed deep appreciation to Shri Theja Meru for his relentless efforts in safeguarding the artistic traditions of Nagaland and the North East. Dr. Anto also acknowledged the vital role played by the Church in promoting education and cultural identity, reiterating that culture is the very soul and fabric of a people. He called upon every individual to become active custodians of their heritage as a contribution to peacebuilding and nation-building.
    The programme was anchored by Ms. Liki K. Zhimo and Mr. Thangeingam Rainam, Social Work trainees of NEISSR. Mr. Yantsumong J. Yimchunger, Cultural Secretary of the Student Council (SCSC), delivered the Welcome Address.
    A wide array of folk performances—including songs and dances representing diverse tribes of Nagaland and the North East—were showcased, reflecting the rich cultural mosaic of the region. Various literary and cultural competitions further enhanced the spirit of the event, fostering creativity and cultural pride among the participants. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks proposed by Mr. Barnic R. Gangmei, Assistant Professor at NEISSR.

  • Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti observed at NEISSR

    North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR), Peace Centre 7th Mile Chümoukedima under the initiative of NSS Unit NEISSR observed Dr. B. R.  Ambedkar Jayanti on 14th April, 2025 at BAM hall.

    Addressing the gathering, Fr. G.L. Khing, Vice Principal NEISSR, spoke on the significant impact of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on Indian society. He emphasized that while tribal communities live with a strong sense of unity and equality, the caste system in many parts of India continues to marginalize people based on birth. Fr. Khing praised Dr. Ambedkar’s efforts in challenging the caste hierarchy, stating that his fight brought about lasting changes in the Indian Constitution and society.

    Highlighting the values Ambedkar propagated—equality, fraternity, liberty and justice, Fr. Khing emphasized that today’s India continues to reap the benefits of his vision and sacrifices. Despite the hardships Ambedkar faced, including during the drafting of the Constitution, his knowledge, character, and commitment to the upliftment of the marginalized prevailed.

    He encouraged students of social work to live with humility and uphold values of justice, equality, and respect, principles that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar firmly stood for. He encouraged them to begin with good thoughts, which would ultimately lead to positive action. While challenges are inevitable, he emphasized the importance of remaining steadfast in their commitment to creating change, assuring them that their contributions would eventually be recognized by society.

    The programme began with the reading of the Preamble of the Indian Constitution and an invocation prayer led by Ms. Hantsula Yimchungru, BSW 6th Semester, NEISSR. The programme was chaired by Vine Domeh, BSW 6th Semester NEISSR.
