NEISSR observed World Social Work Day

North East Institute of Social Sciences and Research (NEISSR) observed World Social Work Day 2026 on 17 March 2026 under the global theme, “Co-building Hope and Harmony: Harambee – Uniting a Divided World.” The programme brought together theNEISSR management, faculty and students in aspirit of collective reflection on peace, unity and social responsibility.

In his keynote address, Rev. Fr. Dr. C. P. Anto, Principal of NEISSR, emphasized the importance of peacebuilding in today’s fractured world. Quoting Albert Einstein, he remarked, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding.” He urged the gathering to reflect deeply on the ongoing humanitarian crises across the globe, particularly in the Middle East, where prolonged conflict has resulted in immense human suffering, displacementand loss of life.

The address highlighted the urgent need for compassion, dialogue and collective responsibility. It stressed that beyond statistics lie real human lives- families disrupted, communities devastated and futures uncertain. The humanitarian challenges, including lack of access to food, water, healthcare and education were acknowledged as pressing concerns demanding global attention and action. Drawing inspiration from the principles of Harambee and Ubuntu, the programme reinforced the interconnectedness of humanity and the shared responsibility to foster peace and social harmony. The teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. were invoked to remind participants of the need to transcend divisions of caste, religion, and region and to work towards a more inclusive and united world.

In his concluding remarks, Fr. Anto issued a strong call to action, encouraging all present to uphold the dignity of every human being and to become agents of peace in their respective communities. The message was further reinforced by the words of Jesus Christ: “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God.”

Earlier, the programme commenced with an invocation by Ms. Vishili Sakhama, MSW 4thSemester, followed by a welcome address delivered by Ms. Lemrila R., MSW 4thSemester.
